Sally did her BA at the University of York before first coming to King’s in 2010 for the MA in Early Modern Literature: Text and Transmission. Her PhD research focuses on Shakespeare and still photography, arguing that the role and nature of the Shakespearean photograph is more complex than the main function which has thus far been accorded it, that is, the need to document Shakespeare’s plays in performance. The project aims to map Shakespearean performance of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries onto the history of photography, focusing on moments when ideas associated with photography have influenced the ways that Shakespeare is presented: from mid-nineteenth-century concerns about visualizing history to the preoccupations with presence and liveness which influenced performances and their documentation in the 1960s and 70s.
